"People need to know what this holiday is about." ~Veteran Mr. Garza
People driving down Interstate 30 north bound through Belton got a shot of patriotism adrenaline today!
Veteran soldier, Mr. Garza stood on the overpass over looking I-30 today for most of the day. I was on my way to Temple to get some food when I noticed him. I had to turn my car around to capture the moment. As I stood opposite the overpass from him, I heard about 15 to 20 cars and freight trucks honk as they drove under the bridge.
I knew that my journalist friend, Natalie, would kill me if I didn't find out his story. So I crossed the bridge to talk with him. I thanked him for what he was doing and what he stood for. He told me, "People know this is a holiday. They get the day off. But they need to understand what it really stands for. If those guys didn't go over there and fight, we would be working our butts off today."
Every car that drove by and honked, he saluted. I am in awe of his dedication to this country and his bravery for standing strong for something he believes in. I am reminded of how I am sometimes so ashamed to stand out, make a bold statement for thousands of people to see. We can apply this man's love of country to our love of a Savior.
Remind people of what you stand for. You don't have to be loud or over bearing. Mr. Garza doesn't have to say a word, and people get the message. How can I stand for Christ in such a way, that when people see me, they know exactly what I believe in?
Some thoughts to ponder. Happy Memorial Day, everyone.
